The New Mayor Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Maiden Address
On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.
Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Platform
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
